Cabin Baggage Allowance by Shanghai Airlines

Shanghai Airlines allows passengers to carry two items into the cabin, one carry-on and one personal item. This shall weigh 7kg (15 lbs) in Economy Class and 10kg (22 lbs) in Business Class. Carry-on is usually limited to 55 cm x 35 cm x 25 cm (22 in. x 14 in. x 9 in.). It should have the size of accommodating fit into the overhead compartment. Laptops, purses, cameras, and small backpacks that fit under your seat are other personal allowed items.

All passenger baggage over the cabin baggage allowance must be checked in. Excess baggage charges will apply according to applicable charges. It is recommended that passengers check in their baggage at least three hours prior to international flights and two hours prior to domestic flights.

Shanghai Airlines gives free checked baggage allowance that depends on the route and the fare class:

The excess baggage can be purchased online from the airline’s website or through the call center prior to the flight at lower prices than what is being sold at the airport. The luggage that weighs more than 32 kg will not be allowed on board since it is above the safety weight.

Sporting Equipment and Musical Instrument

Sporting devices, including golf bags, ski equipment, and bicycles if properly packed, are accepted as checked baggage. It has a maximum weight of 32 kilograms per piece. There are handling fees for oversized pieces.

All sporting types of equipment have to be packed in sufficient packaging to prevent damage by transit. Items that have lengths more than 2 meters have to be cleared and confirmed by the airlines for carry. Special handling will cost more for things such as diving equipment and arms. That requires a permit.

Musical Instruments

If the musical instrument fits within the aircraft size restrictions of 55 cm x 35 cm x 25 cm and within the airline’s weight allowance, then passengers can carry it as cabin baggage. Larger instruments, such as cellos, may have to purchase an additional seat. Instruments too large for cabin baggage must be checked.

For in-transit protection, all instruments should be packed in hardshell cases. Instruments taken onboard are the passenger’s responsibility. Larger instruments requiring a seat must be booked with the airline’s reservation center in advance.
